To ensure a harmonious working relationship with your nanny, mutual respect and being on the same page regarding child-rearing are essential. Remember that your home is your nanny's workspace, and you want them to feel comfortable in her work environment.

The answers is, essentially, not too much! We have used the term Maternity Nurse to describe our experienced, qualified newborn carers for decades and this term is still widely used in the UK. However we have recently noticed that families in Europe and the US are more familiar with the term Newborn Care Specialist to describe a traditional maternity nurse over here.

A Maternity Nurse, Newborn Specialist or Confinement Nurse will have many years of experience, provide practical hands-on support for parents with a calm, experienced influence during Mum鈥檚 post-partum period. They work for 24 hours and require 4 hours break per day. These can be taken all together or during two separate points during the day, usually in collaboration with what works best for the family. They are responsible for feeding, advising on bottle and breast feeding, changing baby, washing/sterilising bottles, initiating a sleep & feeding schedule and devising activities to help baby develop well. These experienced professionals will likely have spent several years caring for babies and will have experience with common newborn complications such as reflux, tongue tied and minor gastro issues. Whilst they are not doctors, they will be happy to advise you about when to seek advice and will likely have the names and numbers of specialists that they would recommend in such situations. 

Confinement Nurses

The role experienced maternity nurses or newborn care specialists play have been traditional in many societies in the past. In China a Confinement Nurse was a traditional hire, that continues to be ever-popular today. These experienced ladies would support mum and baby post-partum but they would also guide mum through local postpartum traditions and beliefs. This type of newborn help can still be hired to this day and provide lots of support and a traditional post partum experience to new mothers.

Night Nurses

A Night Nurse will have the same experience and expertise as other professional newborn carers, the only difference being, they usually work 12 hour shifts overnight. They often begin at 8 or 9pm then work through until 8am or 9am the next morning. 

Maternity Nanny

A Maternity Nanny will usually begin once a baby turns 3 months old or later, they may not have the same level of experience as newborn professionals鈥 carers however, they will feed baby and are experienced with weaning, adapting sleep schedules, and devising developmental activities for baby, such as going to local baby classes or arranging play dates with other babies to encourage good social skills. As nannies, they usually work 12-hour days, 5 or 6 days a week.

For over thirty years, Nannies 糖心volg have helped families around the world recruit exceptional nannies, maternity nurses and governesses. From placing expertly-qualified maternity nurses for royalty, to discrete rota nannies for high-profile couples, it's easy to see that Nannies 糖心volg are a safe pair of hands.

As we edge cautiously into a new normal, we spoke to Annie Martin, founder and director of Nannies 糖心volg, about keeping the personal touch in business, her proudest moments with the agency, and the challenges of the last year.


PD: Annie, it's lovely to meet you. For those who don't know Nannies 糖心volg, could you give us a brief overview of the agency, and how it works?

AM: Of course, and it's lovely to sit down with you! I started Nannies 糖心volg in February 1989 having just had my first child, Philippe. I felt like there was a lack of truly bespoke nanny agencies who understood the importance of balancing the child's needs, while also valuing the needs and wants of working mothers!

We are a small team, and work directly with families as a liaison between them and our hand-selected candidates, only introducing families to individuals who we feel would be a perfect fit. We work all over the world, and have established desks in the UK, France and Dubai.

PD: Music to our ears, and to lots of our readers we're sure. Thirty years is obviously a long time to run a business for, and you could argue that the last thirty have seen huge amounts of change. In your experience, how has the way you work changed?

AM: I've always wanted to keep to a small team of trusted consultants, and we've always ensured that each and every family has a dedicated point of contact throughout their journey with us. Truly understanding the needs of the family is crucial; and of each individual child too of course! As a mother of three, I know well how each child has their own temperament and personality from a very early age.

The biggest change for us has been not the way in which we conduct ourselves, but the means by which we do. Back when I started Nannies 糖心volg, there was no such thing as readily accessible internet - all applications were received by post, and CVs hand-typed. We were actually the first agency in London to have a fax machine, something that has always made me smile, albeit one where you had to feed in the documents one page at a time!

Nowadays, almost all of our initial contact with families and candidates is electronic, and I've always been keen to move with the times - we have a very successful website, an encyclopeadic blog, and active Social accounts. I believe in always keeping an eye to the future.

PD: Do you find that the roles you're placing in the last few years are different to those you placed in the beginning?

AM: In a way, yes. Historically it would be common place for our candidates to be placed with the 'traditional, nuclear' family, where either both parents worked, or the candidates were employed to support the Mother.

Now, we're so happy to work with a range of family make ups - single mothers, single fathers, co-parents, adoptive families, gay parents, extended families, international families - it goes on! The wonder of life is in the variety, I believe, and we're so proud and pleased to work with and support all loving parents.

PD: That's wonderful. You touched on pride there - we wondered if there were any other moments in the Nannies 糖心volg journey that make you particuly proud?

AM: Oh, so many! First and foremost, no matter how many roles we place, I'm also so proud of our team when I get glowing feedback from a family. The difference a carefully selected nanny can make to a family can be enormous, so I know the thanks goes further than the impact of a single pair of hands.

I was also so happy when we opened our dedicated Paris desk in the early 90s, and our Dubai desk in the early 00s. We were growing our French-speaking and Middle Eastern networks so quickly, it was an easy decision to make, and those desks have gone from strength to strength in the years since.

I'm also so proud of how our team has navigated the past eighteen months; everyone knows the challenges that have been faced, but to see our consultants go above and beyond for our families and candidates around the world, in an exceptional context, made such an impact on me. We made sure that no family was left unaided, and all our candidates guided and supported - sometimes with as a little as a friendly ear on the end of the telephone - to ensure that, above all, there was no compromise in the level of care or comfort of the children.

PD: We can emphathise with the challenges you must have felt, and are so glad to hear you felt strong throughout. What's next for Nannies 糖心volg?

AM: For the immediate future, we're focusing on refining our processes to adjust to the varying working requirements both in the UK, in Europe, and further afield.

The combination of the UK's departure from the European Union and evolving travel restrictions (often at short notice) mean we have to be completely on top of the situation, and how differing guidance interacts between different territories. I'm pleased to say that we've adjusted very well, our consultants are now experts on both domestic and international movement, and we're yet to find ourselves with a challenge we can't overcome!

PD: That's fantastic to hear. And, finally, do you have any advice for families considering working with a nanny or maternity nurse for the first time?

AM: Oh, absolutely. I could speak all day on the subject! My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure that you feel absolutely understood by your consultant. They should ask you about your lifestyle, your children, your preferred parenting styles, and your wishes for the future. You should feel confident in them, so that you can lean on their judgement when selecting candidates - several of our Nannies 糖心volg nannies have actually worked with my family over the years, and I make it a personal policy to never place a candidate I wouldn't welcome into my home.

Outside of this, it would be vital to make sure the agency you work with has an outstanding track record, and are completely versed in the legal and financial requirements when employing someone into your family. You don't want to feel you've found a perfect fit for you family, only to find out that a vital piece of paperwork was overlooked.

Although nannies are not legally obliged to hold any formal childcare qualifications, we believe a fully-trained nanny should be a top priority. You should look for candidates with CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education), BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council), NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board) certificates or diplomas.

Visas

For nanny placements in Dubai or Abu Dhabi through Nannies 糖心volg, the families arrange all visa formalities for their nannies. The employing family will become the nanny鈥檚 sponsor for work permit purposes.

It may, however, be helpful for you to have some information on the process involved.

  • To live or work in Dubai, you must hold a working visa. To commence your visa application process, you also must have a current, valid job offer.

  • The working visa allows multiple entries. Therefore you can leave and re-enter for work or vacation as you please with no extra formalities.

  • Your employer in Dubai/UAE is your sponsor and will need to begin this procedure with the immigration department.

  • Upon validation, you will receive your labour card. You need this labour card to apply for a residence visa, which lasts for three years. After three years, you can apply for renewal. For foreigners residing in Dubai, this visa is mandatory.

Housing

Most of our placements in Dubai are typically 鈥榣ive-in鈥 (i.e. the family will provide you with housing in their home). If you do need to provide your own accommodation, it is best to do this through an estate agency.  The growing demand for property in Dubai makes searching on your own quite tricky! 

Health care

To obtain a public 鈥榟ealth card鈥 in Dubai, you will need to go to a health care office and present them with your official documents, including your passport, certificate of employment, two passport photos and a signed application form. After you receive your 鈥榟ealth card鈥, you can receive free treatment at any of the hospitals in the public health system in Dubai. Hospitals, care and treatments are of very high quality in Dubai.

Bank accounts

Opening a bank account in Dubai is a fairly straightforward process. You will need to bring the following documents to the bank:

  • Passport

  • Copy of your rental agreement

  • Residence visa

  • Two photographs

  • A letter from your employer detailing the amount of money to be transferred to your account on a monthly basis.

Upon presentation of these documents, you will receive either a debit or credit card. International credit cards are widely accepted in Dubai, however cheques are rarely accepted.

Perhaps nowadays parents are more influenced by popular shows like 鈥楽uper Nanny鈥 or 鈥楾he Three Day Nanny鈥, but with the arrival of Prince George, parents are looking back at the Royal Family for guidance. From Cradle to Crown, a great book written by Charlotte Zeepvat takes us right back to the nineteenth and twentieth-century and shares personal tales through the eyes of British Nannies who worked for royalty.

The nannies of past-future rulers of Europe share their stories, giving an insight into private, family life inside royal palaces. The nannies and governesses observed the ways of royal households and the customs of other countries. It showed that nannies are more than just employees and have a challenging role in family life. We could compare many tales to the struggle of today鈥檚 Royal Nannies.

Nannies in the British Royal Family

Focussing on the British Royal Family, Prince George鈥檚 Great, Great Grandfather, George VI raised his family in a modern-style family unit with professional support. For example, his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, had three carers in her childhood, but none took the role of the surrogate mother.

The bond between parents and children was close, and family values were strong. The Queen鈥檚 mother employed Clara Knight, known as Allah, as a nanny when the Queen was a child & later in 1933, a governess named Marion Crawford. The job of nannies back then was to supply the love that children need, almost like a surrogate mother. Crawford wrote a tell-all book on life as a Royal Nanny and disclosed that they would have sole charge of the children鈥檚 lives, so much so that the children would miss the nanny and not their mother.

The Prince of Wales was particularly close to his nanny Mabel Anderson. As a young prince, Charles spent most of his time with his royal nannies Helen Lightbody and his nursery nurse Mabel, only seeing his mother in the morning and before bed, suggested his biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby. It is noted that Mabel, who took over charge of his care, was firm but caring and maternal and played a crucial role in Prince Charles鈥檚 upbringing.

Princes William and Harry had a few nannies taking part in their care, and they think very highly of their former nannies. Tiggy Pettifer was a guest at William and Kate鈥檚 wedding. She even described William and Harry as her 鈥渂abies鈥 and played an essential role in helping them adjust after the death of their mother in 1997.

William also had a nanny named Olga Powell, who cared for William when he was six months old, staying to care for him for 15 years. William missed a royal engagement to attend her funeral in October 2012. 

Now, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have created a media storm on whether their children鈥檚 upbringing will be 鈥榟ands-on鈥 or if they will have a Royal Nanny.

British Royal Nannies and Governesses

If you pay them over a set amount, you will be required to enrol them in a workplace pension scheme.

In 2012, the UK government launched savings, designed to get more people looking to the future and save for their retirement. Automatic enrolment requires employers to set up pension funds for their employees, with both you and the employee paying money into the fund each month.

Your Nanny鈥檚 eligibility for auto-enrolment

All nannies aged 22 and over, who earn over the Personal Allowance (拢11,850), must be enrolled into a workplace pension. Nannies who aren鈥檛 eligible still have the right to ask for a workplace pension.

Does auto-enrolment apply to part-time Nannies?

It can do - even if your nanny does not meet the requirements for auto-enrolment, they have a legal right to join a workplace pension scheme, should they wish.

What if your Nanny doesn鈥檛 want a pension?

Your legal obligations are to enrol your nanny in a workplace pension scheme if they meet the above criteria or ask directly to join. However, your nanny can opt out of the scheme if they don鈥檛 wish to take part.

The cost of auto-enrolment for Nanny employers and nannies

Below you will find the minimum percentage that you, your nanny and the government must contribute to your nanny鈥檚 workplace pension:

6th April 2019-onwards

  • 3% - Employer contribution

  • 4% - Nanny contribution

  • 1% - Government contribution

  • TOTAL 鈥 8%

Note: Your employer contribution is not based on your nanny鈥檚 entire salary. It is based on 鈥楺ualifying Earnings鈥. This means you only pay a workplace pension contribution on the part of their gross salary, reducing the amount you have to pay.

The first step to finding the right match is often an introductory meeting. These can be nerve-wracking but at Nannies 糖心volg we鈥檙e here to walk you through the process and make sure that both the family and nanny are happy and start to build a strong relationship.

To make sure the conversation can be as meaningful as possible, both the family and the nanny should ask questions and discuss what they expect from each other and where their respective values lie.

We've been on both sides of the interview process for over 30 years now, and - to help you select the perfect new person for your household - we've compiled a list of our fail-safe tips and questions.

For Families

  • You should provide clear expectations of the nanny鈥檚 role and what you will require of them, whether that鈥檚 accompanying you on holidays or abiding by certain house rules. 

  • Discuss working hours and any extra hours you may require, such as weekends or babysitting if the nanny lives in.

  • Ask the nanny how she will structure her day. What are her favourite activities to do with children?

  • What does she love most about being a nanny? What does she find challenging?

  • How would she cope in an emergency, such as injury, allergic reaction, choking, etc?

  • Do you expect your nanny to drive? Does she have a clean licence?

  • What are the nanny鈥檚 interests, and what other weekly commitments does she currently have?

  • What language do you expect your nanny to speak with the children? 

  • What was the nanny鈥檚 most recent position, and did she enjoy it?

  • Is the nanny trained in infant CPR and first aid?

  • Is the nanny comfortable administering medication, dealing with nappy rash etc?

  • Make sure you introduce your new nanny to your children before she starts and talk to them about her role within the family so they know what to expect.

While it鈥檚 essential to remain professional, your nanny is about to become part of your family life. Be organised when it comes to contracts and salary, but take a moment and ask for her opinion and make sure she has everything she needs鈥 she鈥檒l be a better nanny to you for it.

For Nannies

  • When you meet a new family, don鈥檛 forget to say hello to the children and show interest in them. It will put them at ease and help them bond with you.

  • Ask the family if they have employed a nanny before. Did they have a good relationship with her?

  • Does the family have any concerns about employing a nanny?

  • Do the parents work outside the home, and if so, how far away?

  • Do the children have any special dietary requirements or medical issues?

  • How would the family like to be notified about any accidents or injuries?

  • Do the parents adhere to a particular parenting method or philosophy? 

  • Ask the family if they鈥檙e happy for you to take the children out for activities like museums, the swimming pool or the library?

  • Is there already a routine in place for you to follow, or does the family expect you to create one?

  • What is the salary and how many weeks holiday are you allowed?

  • Does the role involve any language learning or homework? 

  • If the position is live-in, what is the accommodation?

  • Keep an eye on websites and magazines that list activities to do with children in your area. Your charges will love you, and you鈥檒l have fun, too! Feel free to share these.  

  • Once you鈥檝e joined a family, don鈥檛 be afraid to reach out to other nannies. It鈥檚 important to have a social life outside of work, and the nannies you meet could become lifelong friends.

What's your name, and what do you do at Nannies 糖心volg?

My name is Annie Martin and I'm the Founder and Director of Nannies 糖心volg. 

Having worked full time at Nannies 糖心volg for 15 years, I am privileged to now work part-time. However, I am always there for any situations that may arise on a day to day basis. 

I am very lucky to be surrounded by young, professional and enthusiastic consultants. We support each other, with my traditional understanding of how to run a business and their knowledge of technology which, unfortunately, has passed me by! 

What led you to Nannies 糖心volg?

By education, I am a linguist and a lawyer. My first job was at the European Commission in Brussels. This is where I met my husband John, who was and still is a lawyer. 

When we came to live in London, I decided to set up my own business and simultaneously opened Nannies 糖心volg offices in London and Paris, as that is where I could see a gap in the market.

30 years later I have no regrets, every client and nanny is unique and finding the right connection fills me with happiness.

What's your favourite part of working at Nannies 糖心volg?

I love speaking to returning clients and now nearly 30 years on we are finding Nannies for their grandchildren! I like to catch up with our nannies who I have known for many years over coffee and cake.

Finally but by no means least, I enjoy working with my consultants, they know they can count on me to solve any problems that may arise and I can count on them.

Do you have a favourite childhood book? 

As a child, my favourite story was Bambi, which my mother read to me most nights. Although the sad parts brought me to tears, it was a story I loved to hear. As a mother of three, I often read my children one of my favourite childhood books, the French story of Babar the Elephant. It became one of their most popular bedtime stories.  

What's your favourite child-friendly place in London?

I love the Natural History Museum, I used to take my children there many years ago. It only seems like yesterday that we marvelled at the dinosaurs and wondered how they became extinct. I look forward to taking my grandchildren there one day to relive the excitement!

What's on your travel bucket list? 

Having walked part of the Camino de  Santiago Compostela, I would love to walk its entirety as Paula Cole put so well, "Walking is magic". I can't recommend it enough. I read that Plato and Aristotle did much of their brilliant thinking together while ambulating. The movement, the meditation, the health of the blood pumping and the rhythm of footsteps... this is a primal way to connect with one's deeper self.

My love of animals would also take me to the Galapagos Islands to see the world's most unique ecosystem and the majestic emperor penguins of Antarctica.

Hello there, my name is Katie, and I am a modern-day Mary Poppins, currently working through Nannies 糖心volg for a family in Kuwait. I have been a professional nanny for nearly 13 years and have travelled with past families, but this is my first role in the Middle East

I started writing this blog to let other nannies who may be considering working in the Middle East understand how things work out here and what is expected of you. 

This position started as a temporary position in London for a Kuwaiti family with one boy aged 2. During this time, we clicked and the family invited me to Kuwait to work as their nanny. Five months later, I am still here in sunny Kuwait! When the family asked me to go with them, I was a little nervous and wasn't sure what to expect of the country or how they would be with me once they were back home. But I was excited about my new adventure, and so it began. 

Travelling as a nanny to the Middle East 

The flight from Heathrow direct to Kuwait is approx. 5 hours and 45 minutes. I flew with British Airways and was surprised to find a lot of English and American passengers on board! I later learnt that there are a lot of school teachers here teaching in bilingual schools, mostly private. 

So, after a not so delicious aeroplane meal, a movie and a nap we landed, I am greeted by a lovely lady taking me through the visa process and helping me with my bags, which was fabulous as it鈥檚 always a bit daunting in foreign airports on your own. I am then picked up by the driver (many people in Kuwait have drivers) and taken to my new home. 

I notice there is not much traffic, but I am told it鈥檚 the weekend. Friday and Saturday are the weekends here, and most people head to the coast to their beach houses or go camping! On the drive, I take in the scenery and notice how big the houses are and that every house is different in shape, size and colour. 

Meeting the family and the kids 

After a short drive, I arrive at the house and the mum of the family greets me. I instantly feel welcome and start to feel excited about the next few weeks ahead! Mum shows me to my bedroom and I am told I can rest for a few hours before we head over to grandparents鈥 house to be reunited with the little man. 

My bedroom is lovely, a nice double bed and an en-suite, which is always a winner with nannies! I have a balcony but not the best view, but the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and it's January. What more could I want from a view?! When back home, it's snowy, grey, dull and freezing!!

Once I am rested, kind of unpacked and freshened up, we drive over to see the little man. I am feeling a little nervous and apprehensive as to how he is going to take to seeing me again. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming for the child or confusing when someone you have become extremely close to leaves but then returns. Especially at the age of 2 it's difficult to understand! But I needn't have any fear or nervousness, little man greets me with a massive big hug and a kiss! He is so very excited and shows me around and all his toys, then shows me off to his grandparents who are both very welcoming! 

Spare time activities for a nanny in Kuwait 

Today is Friday and it鈥檚 the weekend here so we are heading to the coast to the beach house. I start to get little man鈥檚 things together and notice that there is a whole team of help. Three housemaids, chefs and two drivers, this is all new to me! I've had positions with housekeepers and drivers before but not a whole team. All I have to do is being little man鈥檚 nanny - what a spoilt Poppins! 

I later find out that a British nanny in Kuwait is very rare. The other employees all wear a uniform given to them by their employer; I'm jealous. I鈥檇 quite like a uniform! It would certainly save me having to think about what I wear on a morning! I am mindful of their culture and find wearing casual clothes, e.g. a blouse and jeans are fine. 

When you visit the shopping malls, it is different, very cosmopolitan. So cars are packed, little man is strapped in, all family members are ready and off we go to the ocean for a sleepover.

Until the next time when I shall tell you about the weekend鈥檚 activities and my first taste of Kuwaiti food I shall be going and enjoying the winter sun!!......Poppins out!!
